Finding hope, one day at a time

First chemo + 2: It’s starting to catch up

NB: These posts are written from notes I made at the time. Some days they are reflections; some days they are simply a record of getting through the next hour.

I think I managed to pace myself reasonably well today.

I did a little work, had a nap when I needed one, did some ironing, watched some television, and even made the Greek salad I’d been looking forward to.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite the experience I’d hoped for. My taste buds appear to have gone on strike, and the salad that should have been fresh and sharp mostly tasted like cardboard. Very disappointing!

As the day went on, I began to feel much more tired and achy. The pains seemed to start almost immediately after my 6pm filgrastim injection, and I was beginning to realise that my body was definitely noticing what had happened a few days earlier.

The evening became more difficult.

During the night I felt very unwell and was sick at around 11:30pm, then again about half an hour later. I ended up spending a very uncomfortable night on the sofa, feeling dreadful with a sore throat and stomach pains.

There were a few more moments of retching, although thankfully I wasn’t actually sick again.

One positive thing: I was still drinking plenty of water, which felt important when everything else was feeling rather unsettled.

Today was a reminder that this journey is going to have its ups and downs. Yesterday I was making plans and eating salad; tonight I was on the sofa trying to get through the night.

One day at a time…
